Cahill dominant, A's tie Astros for 1st

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Athletics were an average team two months ago, a dozen games behind the Houston Astros and closer to the bottom of the AL West than the top.

Well, look at the A's now.

Trevor Cahill pitched one-hit ball for seven shutout innings and the Athletics kept up their unlikely turnaround, tying Houston for the division lead by beating the Astros 7-1 Saturday.

BOSTON (AP) Chris Sale understands it's a perfect time for the Boston Red Sox to be cautious with his troublesome shoulder.

He's just frustrated that he's back on the disabled list.

DeGrom beats Phils with CG, ERA now 1.71

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Jacob deGrom didn't take any chances of being lifted after a rain delay. Then, the New York Mets ace finished off one of his best performances of the year.

DeGrom pitched his first complete game of the season and lowered his major league-leading ERA to 1.71, leading the Mets over the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 Saturday.

Martinez hits 38th HR, Red Sox win again

BOSTON (AP) David Price pitched seven solid innings, J.D. Martinez hit his major league-leading 38th homer after Boston jumped to a quick lead and the Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 on Saturday night for their 17th victory in 20 games.

Mitch Moreland added an RBI double during Boston's four-run first inning. The Red Sox, who own the majors' best record, improved to a season-high 52 games over .500 and maintained their 10 1/2-game lead over the second-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Cards top Brewers, move into 2nd WC

ST. LOUIS (AP) Marcell Ozuna homered and Miles Mikolas tossed six effective innings to push the St. Louis Cardinals into the second wild-card spot in the NL with a 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night.

St. Louis moved a half-game ahead of Milwaukee and within four of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.

Musgrove stifles Cubs, Pirates snap skid

PITTSBURGH (AP) Joe Musgrove cruised through seven innings, and the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night.

Musgrove (5-7) allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. He has gone seven innings and surrendered two runs or fewer in four of his past five starts.

Cobb's rare CG helps O's end Tribe's run

CLEVELAND (AP) Alex Cobb looked a lot better than his major league-leading 15 losses.

Cobb pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game in five years, and the Baltimore Orioles snapped Cleveland's six-game win streak with a 4-2 victory over the Indians on Saturday.

Harvey sharp, Reds rough up Bumgarner

CINCINNATI (AP) Matt Harvey took a no-hit try into the sixth inning, Jose Peraza and Dilson Herrera backed him with home runs and the Cincinnati Reds dominated Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants 7-1 on Saturday night.

Scooter Gennett had three hits for the second straight night and scored three runs, Peraza had two hits and scored twice and Brandon Dixon drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double. Cincinnati sent the Giants to their third straight loss after winning three in a row.

Nats P Strasburg could start Tuesday

WASHINGTON (AP) The Nationals have put Jeremy Hellickson on the 10-day disabled list with a right wrist sprain and recalled pitcher Jefry Rodriguez to start against the Miami Marlins.

Washington made the moves before Saturday night's game. The Nationals also recalled pitcher Jimmy Cordero from Syracuse and optioned reliever Trevor Gott to Triple-A.
